1. Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, released a video early Monday morning that attacks President Obama?s handling of the economy by seizing on a phrase he used during a speech: that ?there are always going to be bumps on the road to recovery.? The video begins with about two dozen people laying down in the middle of what looks like a desolate, rural road. Slowly, each one stands up, looks into the camera, and says, ?I?m an American, not a bump in the road.? Each one holds up a small, paper sign that says their name, occupation and ?Stands with Mitt.? The ad is a searing reminder of what Mr. Romney hopes to make the principal issue in the 2012 race ? the economy?s struggle to produce jobs. Mr. Obama, mindful of that, is headed to North Carolina on Monday for the latest in a series of events designed to highlight his administration?s efforts to create more jobs.
2. Tim Pawlenty, the former governor of Minnesota, took aim at Mr. Romney over the weekend, coining the term ?Obamneycare? to describe the health care plans that Mr. Obama and Mr. Romney both passed while in office. In an interview on Fox News Sunday, Mr. Pawlenty said that ?President Obama said that he designed Obamacare after Romneycare and basically made it Obamneycare.? He added that ?what I don?t understand is that they both continue to defend it.? Mr. Pawlenty and his advisers clearly believe that linking Mr. Romney to the president?s health care bill will prove damaging in the Republican primary.
3. The Republican field of presidential contenders is still in flux, but Jon Huntsman, the former governor of Utah, says he?s almost ready to make a decision. Speaking on CNN?s ?State of the Union? on Sunday, Mr. Huntsman signaled that he will make a decision within about 10 days. ?We?re right at the end point. Is your family supportive? Yes, you check that box. Do you think you can rally enough financial support to make it happen? Yes, you check that box. You think on the ground in the key early states ? New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida ? you can create the presence and the excitement and enthusiasm that will work? Yes, you check that box. We?ve basically checked all the boxes, and now we?re moving.? It?s worth noting that he left Iowa out of that list of ?key early states.?
4. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, and Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, faced off for the first time on NBC?s ?Meet the Press.? One main topic? The troubles of Representative Anthony Weiner of New York. Mr. Priebus accused Democrats of waiting too long to call for Mr. Weiner to resign, saying ?Now, it seemed to me that for the first 10 days in this circus that the only job that Nancy Pelosi was interested in saving was Anthony Weiner?s.? Ms. Wasserman Schultz said she waited until it was clear Mr. Weiner had been lying. ?Once he crossed that threshold, acknowledged that, that he?d been lying, had engaged in conduct that is, you know, completely unacceptable and indefensible, that?s where I thought that the ? that?s where I thought the line was crossed,? she said.
5. During delivery of a commencement speech at Ohio State University, House Speaker John A. Boehner made fun of how often people mispronounce his name. Then he got chuckles from the audience by adding: ?Thank God it?s not Weiner.?
6. Rick Perry, the Republican governor of Texas, has not yet said whether he will run for president this year. But in a speech in Los Angeles on Sunday, Mr. Perry took aim at Mr. Obama?s social agenda, saying the president?s position on stem cell research was not consistent with those who oppose abortion. ?Every life is precious,? he said, charging that Mr. Obama?s policies on the research were ?turning the remains of unborn children into nothing more than raw material.?
7. Just a few days after most of his campaign staff quit, Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker, said he ?will prevail? in his bid for the presidency. Speaking to the Republican Jewish Coalition at an event in Los Angeles, Mr. Gingrich noted the controversies that had enveloped his campaign. ?I know full well the rigors of campaigning for public office? in fact, I?ve had some recent reminders,? he said, to laughter.
