Moscone event calendar hints Apple may hold WWDC 2012 June 10-15

Save up to $150 on MacBook Airs and $220 on new MacBook Pros: Mac Pricing Guide updated June 15th. (Find the best price on Macs)

By Josh Ong

Published: 10:30 PM EST Within days of the 2011 Worldwide Developers Conference wrapping up last week, possible hints that Apple will hold WWDC 2012 from June 10 through June 15 of next year have emerged by way of the Moscone Center event calendar.

A generic "Corporate Meeting" listing for June 2012 on the Moscone Center's event calendar, and discovered by MacRumors, has prompted early speculation on the dates for next year's developer conference. Though the dates remain tentative, Apple has used such generic terms in the past as placeholders for its events. Of course, it should be noted that other companies often use similar tactics for meetings they wish to keep under wraps.

For example, in February, AppleInsider reported that a similar "Corporate Meeting" event scheduled for Sunday, June 5 through Thursday, June 9 was likely reserved for WWDC. The following month, Apple confirmed that the conference would indeed be held during those dates.

The speculation is strengthened by the fact that Moscone West, where the event is historically held, is reserved from June 20 through June 23 and June 27 through June 28. Though the June 27 through June 28 is also listed as a generic "Corporate Meeting," the event appears too short to be WWDC.

WWDC 2012

Apple CEO Steve Jobs apologized last week for the inadequate size of the Moscone Center, noting that the space is the biggest Apple can find. As both the iOS and Mac platforms have grown, interest in WWDC has as well. This year's event sold out in a record 10 hours.

Last week's WWDC saw a bevy of software-related announcements, including the unveiling of the iCloud service, the first previews of iOS 5 and further details on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. A small analyst survey taken during the conference discovered that 100 percent of responding attendees develop for iOS, while just seven percent develop for Mac.

Apple's AirPort Utility points to next-gen Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme

Save up to $150 on MacBook Airs and $220 on new MacBook Pros: Mac Pricing Guide updated June 15th. (Find the best price on Macs)

By Josh Ong

Published: 02:30 AM EST A routine update to Apple's Airport Utility application contains references to new 4th generation Time Capsule and 5th generation AirPort Extreme devices, according to a new report.

After Apple released the AirPort Utility 5.5.3 update for Windows and Mac on Monday, device listings were uncovered in the update's binary, MacRumors reports. Apple's documentation for the 10MB downloads lists only that it "resolves an issue that caused the AirPort Utitlity to unexpectedly quit during setup."

Of particular interest are listings for "K31 K30B Time Capsule (Simultaneous Dual-Band, Gen3)" and "K10B Apple AirPort Extreme (Simultaneous Dual-Band, Gen3)." Elsewhere in the code for the utility, the rumored devices are reportedly listed as "Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Generation)" and "AirPort Extreme 802.11n (5th Generation)."

Apple's current simultaneous dual-band AirPort products, which were last updated in October 2009, are described as "Gen2."

Recent reports have suggested that available stock of Apple's AirPort and Time Capsule wireless base stations has dwindled ahead of a product update. The latest rumors claim Apple may shift the base stations to run iOS.

iOS-based AirPort base stations could allow for more robust features, such as print and media streaming services, integration with iCloud, and cached wireless software updates. Code references in AirPort Utility seem to support the likelihood of software update caching, according to people familiar with the matter.

Also, indications that Apple is working on wireless drivers for non-Intel CPUs may point to the possibility that Apple plans to enable iOS devices to setup and configure new AirPort or Time Capsule devices without the help of a Mac or Windows PC. Such a move could align with Apple's Post PC strategy, as the company recently revealed that the forthcoming iOS 5 has been designed to be "PC Free" by way of wireless activation, syncing and backup.

Kojima using 'Transfarring' cloud data for all future games

You might also like: , , and more
Hideo Kojima said during a recent Kojima Productions podcast that the cloud data sharing system he created from dragonscales, Old Snake's mustache trimmings and cardboard boxes -- "Transfarring" -- will be available for every title his studio releases in the future. That means all of its games going forward, including the Metal Gear Solid and Zone of the Enders re-releases, Metal Gear Solid Rising and the new Fox Engine game, will all presumably provide some connection between the PS3 and PS Vita.

Does this mean a version of Metal Gear Solid Rising for the PS Vita? We'll have to wait and see. More importantly, perhaps, we're wondering how long it will take for someone to tell Kojima that cloud saving has been around for a while -- just so he can stop using that very silly name.

BBC developing internal iOS app for live mobile reporting

Save up to $150 on MacBook Airs and $220 on new MacBook Pros: Mac Pricing Guide updated June 14th. (Find the best price on Macs)

By Daniel Eran Dilger

Published: 06:00 PM EST The BBC, a pioneer in bringing on-demand programming to iOS users, is now leveraging Apple's mobile platform to build a client app to allow reporters to upload images, audio and video using an iPhone or iPad.

According to a report by Journalism.co.uk, the new app will even enable the broadcaster's journalists to report live from their iOS devices over 3G mobile data networks.

The app is expected to be available in about a month. Martin Turner, the BBC's head of newsgathering operations, told the site that the new iOS app was "a logical extension of what the BBC can do already" but noted that it was a "significant development" and that the capability to file live reports from mobile devices "is a really important one."

Speaking of Apple's iPhone, Turner said "we are using it at the moment because it offers us the best combination of features, but it is not the only solution," and added that the BBC was "not wedded to the iPhone."

While a variety of networks have made available iOS apps to enable citizen reporting, the BBC appears to be the first broadcaster to commission an app for its own reporters to use. Other reporters have already begun using the iPhone and iPad to file their reports however.

The BBC was also the first broadcaster to aggressively move to adopt Apple's recommended H.264 video on iOS devices, beginning with its iPlayer app for iOS apps in early 2008. Prior to that, the BBC and most other commercial content providers on the web were reliant upon Adobe Flash to make such videos available.
