Moscone event calendar hints Apple may hold WWDC 2012 June 10-15

Save up to $150 on MacBook Airs and $220 on new MacBook Pros: Mac Pricing Guide updated June 15th. (Find the best price on Macs)

By Josh Ong

Published: 10:30 PM EST Within days of the 2011 Worldwide Developers Conference wrapping up last week, possible hints that Apple will hold WWDC 2012 from June 10 through June 15 of next year have emerged by way of the Moscone Center event calendar.

A generic "Corporate Meeting" listing for June 2012 on the Moscone Center's event calendar, and discovered by MacRumors, has prompted early speculation on the dates for next year's developer conference. Though the dates remain tentative, Apple has used such generic terms in the past as placeholders for its events. Of course, it should be noted that other companies often use similar tactics for meetings they wish to keep under wraps.

For example, in February, AppleInsider reported that a similar "Corporate Meeting" event scheduled for Sunday, June 5 through Thursday, June 9 was likely reserved for WWDC. The following month, Apple confirmed that the conference would indeed be held during those dates.

The speculation is strengthened by the fact that Moscone West, where the event is historically held, is reserved from June 20 through June 23 and June 27 through June 28. Though the June 27 through June 28 is also listed as a generic "Corporate Meeting," the event appears too short to be WWDC.

WWDC 2012

Apple CEO Steve Jobs apologized last week for the inadequate size of the Moscone Center, noting that the space is the biggest Apple can find. As both the iOS and Mac platforms have grown, interest in WWDC has as well. This year's event sold out in a record 10 hours.

Last week's WWDC saw a bevy of software-related announcements, including the unveiling of the iCloud service, the first previews of iOS 5 and further details on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. A small analyst survey taken during the conference discovered that 100 percent of responding attendees develop for iOS, while just seven percent develop for Mac.

Apple's AirPort Utility points to next-gen Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme

Save up to $150 on MacBook Airs and $220 on new MacBook Pros: Mac Pricing Guide updated June 15th. (Find the best price on Macs)

By Josh Ong

Published: 02:30 AM EST A routine update to Apple's Airport Utility application contains references to new 4th generation Time Capsule and 5th generation AirPort Extreme devices, according to a new report.

After Apple released the AirPort Utility 5.5.3 update for Windows and Mac on Monday, device listings were uncovered in the update's binary, MacRumors reports. Apple's documentation for the 10MB downloads lists only that it "resolves an issue that caused the AirPort Utitlity to unexpectedly quit during setup."

Of particular interest are listings for "K31 K30B Time Capsule (Simultaneous Dual-Band, Gen3)" and "K10B Apple AirPort Extreme (Simultaneous Dual-Band, Gen3)." Elsewhere in the code for the utility, the rumored devices are reportedly listed as "Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Generation)" and "AirPort Extreme 802.11n (5th Generation)."

Apple's current simultaneous dual-band AirPort products, which were last updated in October 2009, are described as "Gen2."

Recent reports have suggested that available stock of Apple's AirPort and Time Capsule wireless base stations has dwindled ahead of a product update. The latest rumors claim Apple may shift the base stations to run iOS.

iOS-based AirPort base stations could allow for more robust features, such as print and media streaming services, integration with iCloud, and cached wireless software updates. Code references in AirPort Utility seem to support the likelihood of software update caching, according to people familiar with the matter.

Also, indications that Apple is working on wireless drivers for non-Intel CPUs may point to the possibility that Apple plans to enable iOS devices to setup and configure new AirPort or Time Capsule devices without the help of a Mac or Windows PC. Such a move could align with Apple's Post PC strategy, as the company recently revealed that the forthcoming iOS 5 has been designed to be "PC Free" by way of wireless activation, syncing and backup.

Kojima using 'Transfarring' cloud data for all future games

You might also like: , , and more
Hideo Kojima said during a recent Kojima Productions podcast that the cloud data sharing system he created from dragonscales, Old Snake's mustache trimmings and cardboard boxes -- "Transfarring" -- will be available for every title his studio releases in the future. That means all of its games going forward, including the Metal Gear Solid and Zone of the Enders re-releases, Metal Gear Solid Rising and the new Fox Engine game, will all presumably provide some connection between the PS3 and PS Vita.

Does this mean a version of Metal Gear Solid Rising for the PS Vita? We'll have to wait and see. More importantly, perhaps, we're wondering how long it will take for someone to tell Kojima that cloud saving has been around for a while -- just so he can stop using that very silly name.

BBC developing internal iOS app for live mobile reporting

Save up to $150 on MacBook Airs and $220 on new MacBook Pros: Mac Pricing Guide updated June 14th. (Find the best price on Macs)

By Daniel Eran Dilger

Published: 06:00 PM EST The BBC, a pioneer in bringing on-demand programming to iOS users, is now leveraging Apple's mobile platform to build a client app to allow reporters to upload images, audio and video using an iPhone or iPad.

According to a report by Journalism.co.uk, the new app will even enable the broadcaster's journalists to report live from their iOS devices over 3G mobile data networks.

The app is expected to be available in about a month. Martin Turner, the BBC's head of newsgathering operations, told the site that the new iOS app was "a logical extension of what the BBC can do already" but noted that it was a "significant development" and that the capability to file live reports from mobile devices "is a really important one."

Speaking of Apple's iPhone, Turner said "we are using it at the moment because it offers us the best combination of features, but it is not the only solution," and added that the BBC was "not wedded to the iPhone."

While a variety of networks have made available iOS apps to enable citizen reporting, the BBC appears to be the first broadcaster to commission an app for its own reporters to use. Other reporters have already begun using the iPhone and iPad to file their reports however.

The BBC was also the first broadcaster to aggressively move to adopt Apple's recommended H.264 video on iOS devices, beginning with its iPlayer app for iOS apps in early 2008. Prior to that, the BBC and most other commercial content providers on the web were reliant upon Adobe Flash to make such videos available.

Angry Birds looks to conjure some location-based Magic [Video]

Rovio is looking to take Angry Birds local with location-based integration, which will now enhance the game play for users when they visit real-world locations. The feature, called Magic, builds off a previously announced NFC feature for certain Nokia phones, which allows a very limited number of users to unlock additional levels when they tap two NFC phonestogether or tap an NFC tag at a location.

With Magic, when users arrive at a location with their GPS-enabled smartphones, they will be able to trigger new content such asMighty Eagle, the most powerful character in the game as well as a raft of new, never before released game content. Users will be able to compete with other players on a localized leaderboard for each venue. Stepping back, Rovio is looking to turn Magic into a broad platform that will be built into all of its products, spurring on more real world interactivity through NFC, GPS and other technologies.

I caught up with Peter Vesterbacka, Rovio?s Mighty Eagle and Ramine Darabiha, product manager for Angry Birds Magic, who are in New York to talk more about Magic Places. I asked what it means to leverage location in Angry Birds and the implications for Rovio?s business.

Darabiha said the idea for Magic Places is to build more fun into the game, turning what is often an activity played in isolation into something you do in the real world. He said Rovio is not interested in turning every location into a Magic venue but islooking to use location selectively to enhance the game play for users. The key is find places that complement the game and make the experience more memorable for users.

?We?re using this as a way to encourage people to go and find new places and new content,? Darahiba said. ?It will be a distribution point for us.?

The company is rolling out Magic to its various Angry Birds games editions later this year and is preparing to announce new U.S. retail partners in the coming weeks. Vesterbacka said while Magic started with NFC and Nokia to unlock content, he said other technologies such as Bump can be utilized to reward users.

Rovio is focusing on this effort and sees a big opportunity to extend itself into real world interactions, which can make the game more meaningful for people. And it contributes to Rovio?s more ambitious goal to build 1 billion fans of Angry Birds.

I think this could be a decent revenue source as well down the road. Angry Birds, which has a rabid and faithful following, can help popularize location-based services by showcasing the feature in its games. And it might find merchants interested in introducing their locations to the Angry Birds user base and paying a premium for it. If the Magic Places are thoughtfully selected and tied to some real-world actions and rewards outside of the game, it could put Angry Birds into a position of uniting merchants and retailers with customers, something Foursquare and other location services are attempting to do.

But Darabiha, who is scheduled to share more today at the ReadWriteWeb 2Way Summit in New York today, said the plan isn?t to aggressively monetize Magic though merchants. He said merchants can expect to see increased traffic, but the payoff for Rovio is to build deeper engagement with the Angry Birds brand.

The game is already a runaway success, having been downloaded 200 million times as it spreads across numerous platforms.Rovio is now looking to see how it can tap that community and build a larger business out of this fan base. Vesterbacka showed me a glimpse of the upcoming Angry Birds cookbook. Rovio has also sold a number of plush toys and it?s looking to push Angry Birds on to larger screens, potentially Hollywood fare. The company also introduced its own carrier billing system for virtual goods.

As my colleague Bobbie Johnson wrote recently, Rovio needs to figure out what comes after Angry Birds. A real world component of Angry Birds won?t answer questions about what the next big hit is for Rovio. But the company is showing that it is exploring every opportunity with its hit franchise. And with the $42 million in funding, it has no lack of resources. I agree with Bobbie that Rovio?s got to be thinking about what?s next and Vesterbacka assured me they are looking at that too. But for now, I?m curious to see what Rovio can do with location. Despite all the badges and other rewards it?s not everyone?s idea of fun. But Angry Birds could change some of that.

Annotation hack brings Tic Tac Toe to YouTube

Just when you thought it wasn?t possible to waste even more time with YouTube, here comes Interactive Tic Tac Toe, a game that makes use of YouTube?s annotation feature to bring some interactivity to the video site. Users can play against the game?s producer Rutter Jared, who appears on-screen to comment on each and every move, mocking silly mistakes and ultimately prevailing in most cases.

YouTube introduced its annotation feature some three years ago, allowing producers to jump from one video to another. Producers have long utilized this to build interactive adventures and photo challenges, loading a new video every time the viewer chooses an option.

Interactive Tic Tac Toe takes this type of YouTube hack to the extreme by presenting a new video for every single possible move available in the game. All in all, Jared produced 131 videos, which he tagged with more than 1,000 annotations, he told us via email. The whole thing took him about a month of 14-hour workdays. Adding all those annotations on YouTube took more than three days alone, Jared said. However, the most tedious task was the video editing. ?Some nights I would set my alarm and wake up every hour to re-edit videos,? he told us.

This Tic Tac Toe game is only one of a number of videos produced by Jared that make use of YouTube?s annotation feature. He started to produce videos for the site about a year ago, and has been able to make a living as a YouTube producer since November.

?YouTube is my first actual job, and I love it,? the 21-year-old told us. ?It?s the greatest job in the world.? Jared is now working on growing his viewership and eventually wants to become as big as Mystery Guitar Man and other YouTube stars.

YouTube has been working on ramping up the monetization of its content on recent months with a number of initiatives that aim to help producers become more successful. The Google-owned site purchased Next New Networks in March, and recently sent a number of YouTubers to college to freshen up on video production and storytelling skills. Jared?s interactive adventures may not quite fit in with some of these more polished productions coming out of the Next New stable, but his inventiveness goes to show that YouTube producers who want to make a living with online video are going to push the boundaries of what?s possible on the site.

Best Political Quotes of the Weekend

By MICHAEL D. SHEAR

Miss the best of the political chatter over the weekend? Don?t worry. The Caucus has gathered the quotes and clips you need to see.

1. Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, released a video early Monday morning that attacks President Obama?s handling of the economy by seizing on a phrase he used during a speech: that ?there are always going to be bumps on the road to recovery.? The video begins with about two dozen people laying down in the middle of what looks like a desolate, rural road. Slowly, each one stands up, looks into the camera, and says, ?I?m an American, not a bump in the road.? Each one holds up a small, paper sign that says their name, occupation and ?Stands with Mitt.? The ad is a searing reminder of what Mr. Romney hopes to make the principal issue in the 2012 race ? the economy?s struggle to produce jobs. Mr. Obama, mindful of that, is headed to North Carolina on Monday for the latest in a series of events designed to highlight his administration?s efforts to create more jobs.

2. Tim Pawlenty, the former governor of Minnesota, took aim at Mr. Romney over the weekend, coining the term ?Obamneycare? to describe the health care plans that Mr. Obama and Mr. Romney both passed while in office. In an interview on Fox News Sunday, Mr. Pawlenty said that ?President Obama said that he designed Obamacare after Romneycare and basically made it Obamneycare.? He added that ?what I don?t understand is that they both continue to defend it.? Mr. Pawlenty and his advisers clearly believe that linking Mr. Romney to the president?s health care bill will prove damaging in the Republican primary.

3. The Republican field of presidential contenders is still in flux, but Jon Huntsman, the former governor of Utah, says he?s almost ready to make a decision. Speaking on CNN?s ?State of the Union? on Sunday, Mr. Huntsman signaled that he will make a decision within about 10 days. ?We?re right at the end point. Is your family supportive? Yes, you check that box. Do you think you can rally enough financial support to make it happen? Yes, you check that box. You think on the ground in the key early states ? New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida ? you can create the presence and the excitement and enthusiasm that will work? Yes, you check that box. We?ve basically checked all the boxes, and now we?re moving.? It?s worth noting that he left Iowa out of that list of ?key early states.?

4. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, and Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, faced off for the first time on NBC?s ?Meet the Press.? One main topic? The troubles of Representative Anthony Weiner of New York. Mr. Priebus accused Democrats of waiting too long to call for Mr. Weiner to resign, saying ?Now, it seemed to me that for the first 10 days in this circus that the only job that Nancy Pelosi was interested in saving was Anthony Weiner?s.? Ms. Wasserman Schultz said she waited until it was clear Mr. Weiner had been lying. ?Once he crossed that threshold, acknowledged that, that he?d been lying, had engaged in conduct that is, you know, completely unacceptable and indefensible, that?s where I thought that the ? that?s where I thought the line was crossed,? she said.

5. During delivery of a commencement speech at Ohio State University, House Speaker John A. Boehner made fun of how often people mispronounce his name. Then he got chuckles from the audience by adding: ?Thank God it?s not Weiner.?

6. Rick Perry, the Republican governor of Texas, has not yet said whether he will run for president this year. But in a speech in Los Angeles on Sunday, Mr. Perry took aim at Mr. Obama?s social agenda, saying the president?s position on stem cell research was not consistent with those who oppose abortion. ?Every life is precious,? he said, charging that Mr. Obama?s policies on the research were ?turning the remains of unborn children into nothing more than raw material.?

7. Just a few days after most of his campaign staff quit, Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker, said he ?will prevail? in his bid for the presidency. Speaking to the Republican Jewish Coalition at an event in Los Angeles, Mr. Gingrich noted the controversies that had enveloped his campaign. ?I know full well the rigors of campaigning for public office? in fact, I?ve had some recent reminders,? he said, to laughter.

AT&T defends T-Mobile acquisition, says no effect on competition

By Josh Ong

Published: 10:00 PM EST AT&T filed a statement with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Friday claiming that the wireless market will "remain vibrantly competitive" after its merger with T-Mobile USA.
The filing contains AT&T's response to a petition by rival carrier Sprint opposing the $39 billion deal. Sprint alleged in its filing that the acquisition would hurt smaller carriers trying to negotiate for backhaul and roaming agreements. The petition also cited an industry expert accusing AT&T of inadequate investment in its network to prepare for 4G LTE.
In addition to responding to Sprint's petition, the AT&T filing also answers a list of questions that the FCC sent last month.
AT&T focused on five key points throughout the statement. First, the wireless carrier asserts that "the transaction will generate jobs and economic growth." If the merger goes through, AT&T plans to invest more than $8 billion to expand LTE deployment and to integrate the AT&T and T-Mobile USA networks. In particular, the company sees the LTE expansion as having "job-creating ripple effects" throughout the economy.
The filing also claims that the transaction will "preserve and promote competition and innovation. "Nothing about the combination of AT&T and T-Mobile USA could possibly keep Sprint or any other provider from acting on the same incentives it has today to keep innovating in this unusually dynamic ecosystem," AT&T said, citing "incredible support for [the merger] from a large and broadly diverse number of high-tech companies."
"As anyone who watches television or reads the newspaper knows, the wireless market is one of the most competitive in the entire U.S. economy, with wireless providers aggressively marketing a vast array of products and services," the company wrote. AT&T alleges that the resurgence of Sprint and the fact that roughly 75 percent of Americans have a choice of five or more facilities-based wireless providers demonstrate "the basic competitive realities" in the American market.
According to AT&T, the post-acquisition company will have a far greater network capacity than its pre-merger parts. The company takes issue with accusations of underinvestment, arguing that its $75 billion investment to upgrade its wireline and wireless networks is "more than any other public company has invested in the U.S."

AT&T also turned the tables on Sprint, noting that Clearwire, which Sprint owns a majority stake in, has a "far stronger" combined spectrum position than AT&T and T-Mobile. With an average of 160-megahertz of spectrum in the top markets, Clearwire has the "best spectrum position in the industry," the filing claims. "This is more than the combined AT&T/T-Mobile company would have if their merger is approved, and does not even include the additional spectrum Sprint holds directly."

During a Senate hearing investigating the proposed acquisition last month, AT&T promised that it would reach 97 percent of the nation's population with 4G LTE if the deal was approved. Meanwhile, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse called for Congress to "just say no to this takeover."

Syrian lesbian blog is a hoax: So who?s to blame?

Fake photograph of fictional Syrian blogger Amina Arraf

It took months for the world to pick up on the plight of Amina Arraf, a lesbian blogger from Damascus who challenged the authorities ? and her readers ? to understand the troubles of Syria?s population. Her end, however, was decidedly swift.

After a series questions and investigations into her identity, it rapidly emerged that the whole thing was a hoax. In a posting published a short while ago, ?Amina? was revealed to be a fictional character ? the work of a Scottish educator, Tom MacMaster, who claimed that he had created the character in order to publicize the situation in Syria:

I never expected this level of attention. While the narrative vo?ce may have been fictional, the facts on th?s blog are true and not m?sleading as to the situation on the ground. I do not believe that I have harmed anyone ? I feel that I have created an important voice for issues that I feel strongly about.

I only hope that people pay as much attention to the people of the Middle East and their struggles in th?s year of revolutions. The events there are be?ng shaped by the people living them on a daily basis. I have only tried to illuminate them for a western audience.

This experience has sadly only confirmed my feelings regarding the often superficial coverage of the Middle East and the pervasiveness of new forms of liberal Orientalism.

The truth is, however, that his confession came only after the net had already closed in, thanks to a series of links back to MacMaster and his wife, American campaigner Britta Froelicher. There had already been a number of skeptics by the time the first shoe really dropped, when the blog carried news of Arraf?s disappearance and arrest. The sudden flurry of media activity that followed led to the revelation that the photo of ?Amina? was actually Jelena Lecic, a Croatian woman living in London. Alarm bells started ringing, though obviously there were plenty of reasons why Arraf might use a fake photograph (as well as, possibly, an obscured identity, though she claimed at times it was her real name).

But after a collective effort from a number of individuals, notably NPR?s Andy Carvin, San Francisco developer Liz Henry and Electronic Intifada?s Ali Abunimah, the truth came out. It also emerged that MacMaster and his wife were a pair of seasoned pro-Palestinian campaigners based largely in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The reaction so far has been a mixture of relief ? that Amina was not really imprisoned after all ? and anger; anger not only at being duped, but also because the hoax potentially endangers the lives and stories of real Syrians trying to fight the regime of Bashar al-Assad. The Electronic Freedom Foundation?s Jillian York, for example, who has written eloquently about her feelings on the situation, says she is ?furious?.

So what does this hoax tell us? What will it mean?

There will likely be some social and political repercussions. Actual members of Syria?s gay communities were concerned that they would be targeted by the authorities since the blog (and therefore their repressive tactics) had become so widely discussed. That doesn?t sit well with MacMaster?s statement that he does not believe he?s harmed anyone. At the same time, the political stance of both MacMaster and Froelicher will inevitably allow some political sites to paint the whole enterprise (and by association, concern for Syrians) as some anti-Israeli conspiracy.

And then, of course, there will be the inevitable hand-wringing. How did readers get fooled so easily? Why did nobody find this out before? How did news organizations get sucked in?

It?s likely that some will blame this on the mainstream media?s failure to out Arraf. Numerous outlets covered her story: CNN quoted her in an article and the Guardian also ran an interview with her. How could they not know? Was there a failure of process?

There have been plenty of high-profile failures in the news business over the years, from the Hitler Diaries to the Balloon Boy hoax. News organizations are looking for credible, compelling stories and Arraf?s was too interesting to ignore. The blog had been online for some years, telling a consistent story. Of course, confirming her identity was hard, but she conducted long conversations with people over IM and Skype and had credible reasons for staying a little under the radar (NPR?s Carvin asked the Guardian about their interview and it turned out it did not happen in person). This was a failure, obviously, since the hoax wasn?t spotted ? but right now, it?s not clear how serious that failure was.

At the same time, some will likely suggest that it?s the online world?s fault for allowing her story to spread so far and so fast. Without the instant pass-it-along-and-don?t-check-the-facts nature of a service like Twitter, without the anyone-can-do-it nature of blogging, would we even be in this situation? Despite the fact that Twitter, blogging and the rest helped solve this puzzle, there?s not much to crow about. The online world has more than its share of hoaxes, and the fake blogger routine has been around for a long time.

I remember writing a story more than 10 years ago about a blogger called Kaycee Nicole, who purported to be an American teenager documenting her fight against leukaemia. She gained a significant following in the run-up to her death in 2001 ? at which point, after some skeptics decided to investigate, it turned out to be a hoax. The culprit, a Debbie Swenson, had gone to extraordinary lengths to keep the fantasy going: online chats, photos, phone calls and so on. She received lots of good will and plenty of gifts from well-wishers ? so much so, that the FBI ended up looking into the case over fraud allegations. Online hoaxes of this sort have been going on for years and will continue as long as people are trying to deceive the audience.

The truth is, whether it?s a fictional character like Amina Arraf or faked material like Hitler?s diaries or simply a sad fantasy like Kaycee Nicole, moments like this will always exist as long as there are rules for somebody to work around.

Attention is an incredible, addictive thing, and verification can sometimes be difficult. As long as some people want to deliberately deceive you, for whatever reason, and there are people who want to believe, then hoaxes will be hard to eradicate.

Nine Drawn and Quartered at Renaissance Fair

December 18, 1995 | ISSUE 28?18

Richmond, Virginia's annual Renaissance Fair featured plenty of exciting, historically accurate action, such as jousting, swordfighting, archery competitions, and the evisceration of condemned heretics' vital organs.

RICHMOND, VA?Nine people were torn limb-from-limb and skewered through the anus with wooden stakes this weekend at the city?s annual Renaissance Fair. Organizers boast that the ?Drawn and Quartered? show made this year?s fair one of the most authentic ever.

The early-Renaissance torture demonstration was one of many improvisations that peppered the fair ground, performed by actors from the local theatre community dressed in period costumes. These performances have been a fixture of past years? fairs.

?The skits where we publicly tortured and humiliated ?condemned heretics? gave us by far the most response we?ve ever gotten,? actor Paul Mealen said. ?Who would have thought that violence would appeal to people??

In the skit, victims were randomly selected from the crowd, strung up on posts, and read official ?charges.? A dirt-encrusted dagger was then used to saw off vital parts of the condemned. One man?s scrotum was cut off, causing his testicles to fall to the ground. According to witnesses, children at the festival then tossed the testicles back and forth as the victim watched.

Vital organs such as the liver were cut out of further victims, then cooked and force-fed to them. The pale and barely conscious victims were then taken down from the posts and prepared for the next stage of their torture amid taunts and bellows from the crowd.

?We loved it,? said Both University of Virginia student Steve Limeneg, who, along with his friend Alicia Ponfret, was attending the fair for the first time. ?It was like we were transported back to the real Renaissance. We got turkey drumsticks at the Ye Olde Grille, threw stones at the Drench a Wench booth?I won a stuffed jester doll?then we got to see this heretic forced to eat his own kidney.?

Added Richmond middle-school teacher Linda Rougfas: ?It was a lot of fun. They picked my husband out of the crowd and he thought it was a kick. When they eviscerated him and he started screaming and begging for his life and crying out to me, the kids and I did our part, yelling ?heretic!? and so on.?

Next, four horses were tied to the arms and legs of each victim, and each horse was made to pull in opposing directions, summarily causing limbs to tear off and go skipping in every direction. Finally, the disembodied and helpless torsos were fed to packs of ravenous dogs. The victims? horrific, wheezing screams caught the attention of the entire fair.

?I thought it was very impressive,? said Her-man Kline-mest, an executive at a nearby bank who partook of the fair with his wife and three children. ?I en-joyed taunting the condemned, and my children enjoyed playing with the testicles.?

One volunteer was tied up and laid on his back spread-eagled, his legs held apart by a short beam roped to a horse. A long wooden stake was braced against a rock and inserted just a few inches into the participant?s anus. When the horse was given a snap from the whip, it bolted, causing the participant to be driven onto the stake until it thrust out of his mouth.

Festival organizer Liz Fendamn has been under pressure to compete with nearby Colonial Williamsburg for tourist dollars, and she said the event was popular enough to guarantee a return next year.

?We try to give people a merry ol? time, m?Lord,? she said with a smile. ?Ye can bet yer knickers we?ll be doing it again.?

She hinted they may even have the performing troupe dress like Spanish soldiers and wantonly slaughter masses of heretical fair visitors.

Though most everyone thought the fair was the most successful ever, several family members of the killed were not so enthusiastic.

?My husband and I came to the fair as part of our honeymoon,? Jacklyn Welden said. ?When he was stabbed through the heart and killed for blaspheming the Pope, the fair suddenly became less fun.?

Welden added that she will not be returning next year.
